Mike, I'm surprised at your surprise. Did you not know that you can insert non-ASCII chars into plain-text email? /Videlicet/:
à±²³´µ¶·¸¹°½ÿ # Alt-`1234567890-=<BkSp> þ¡À£¤¥Þ¦ª¨©ß«ÿ # Alt-Shift + above ñ÷åòôùõéïðÛÝÜ # Alt-qwertyyuiop[]\ Ñ×ÅÒÔÙÕÉÏÐûýü # Alt-shift -"- áóäæçèêë컧 # Alt-asdfghjkl;' ÁÓÄÆÇÈÊË̺¢ # Alt-shift -"- úøãöâîí¬®¯ # Alt-zxcvbnm,./ ÚØÃÖÂÎͼ¾¿ # Alt-shift -"-
There's a number of others (e.g., the Alt-Ctrl-<ltr> set), but the above are usually sufficient for most situations.
Then, there are the digraphs available in Vim (depending on your charset, of course). Some of these may not display for you, depending on your setup, but:
¬ ® ¯ ° ± ² ³ ´ µ ¶ ¸ ¹ º » ¼ ½ ¾ ¿ À Á Â Ã Ä Å Æ Ç È É Ê Ë Ì Í Î Ï Ð Ñ Ò Ó Ô Õ Ö × Ø Ù Ú Û Ü Ý Þ ß à á â ã ä å æ ç è é ê ë ì í î ï ð ñ ò ó ô õ ö ÷ ø ù ú û ü ý þ ÿ Ā ā Ă ă Ą ą Ć ć Ĉ ĉ Ċ ċ Č č Ď ď Đ đ Ē ē Ĕ ĕ Ė ė Ę ę Ě ě Ĝ ĝ Ğ ğ Ġ ġ Ģ ģ Ĥ ĥ Ħ ħ Ĩ ĩ Ī ī Ĭ ĭ Į į İ ı IJ ij Ĵ ĵ Ķ ķ ĸ Ĺ ĺ Ļ ļ Ľ ľ Ŀ ŀ Ł ł Ń ń Ņ ņ Ň ň ʼn Ŋ ŋ Ō ō Ŏ ŏ Ő ő Œ œ Ŕ ŕ Ŗ ŗ Ř ř Ś ś Ŝ ŝ Ş ş Š š Ţ ţ Ť ť Ŧ ŧ Ũ ũ Ū ū Ŭ ŭ Ů ů Ű ű Ų ų Ŵ ŵ Ŷ ŷ Ÿ Ź ź Ż ż Ž ž Ơ ơ Ƣ ƣ Ʀ Ư ư Ƶ ƶ Ʒ Ǎ ǎ Ǐ ǐ Ǒ ǒ Ǔ ǔ Ǟ ǟ Ǡ ǡ Ǣ ǣ Ǥ ǥ Ǧ ǧ Ǩ ǩ Ǫ ǫ Ǭ ǭ Ǯ ǯ ǰ Ǵ ǵ ʿ ˇ ˘ ˙ ˚ ˛ ˝ Ά Έ Ή Ί Ό Ύ Ώ ΐ Α Β Γ Δ Ε Ζ Η Θ Ι Κ Λ Μ Ν Ξ Ο Π Ρ Σ Τ Υ Φ Χ Ψ Ω Ϊ Ϋ ά έ ή ί ΰ α β γ δ ε ζ η θ ι κ λ μ ν ξ ο π ρ ς σ τ υ φ χ ψ ω ϊ ϋ ό ύ ώ Ϙ ϙ Ϛ ϛ Ϝ ϝ Ϟ ϟ Ϡ ϡ ϴ ϵ Ё Ђ Ѓ Є Ѕ І Ї Ј Љ Њ Ћ Ќ Ў Џ А Б В Г Д Е Ж З И Й К Л М Н О П Р С Т У Ф Х Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ Ы Ь Э Ю Я а б в г д е ж з и й к л м н о п р с т у ф х ц ч ш щ ъ ы ь э ю я ё ђ ѓ є ѕ і ї ј љ њ ћ ќ ў џ Ѣ ѣ Ѫ ѫ Ѳ ѳ Ѵ ѵ Ҁ ҁ Ґ ґ א ב ג ד ה ו ז ח ט י ך כ ל ם מ ן נ ס ע ף פ ץ צ ק ר ש ת Ḃ ḃ Ḇ ḇ Ḋ ḋ Ḏ ḏ Ḑ ḑ Ḟ ḟ Ḡ ḡ Ḣ ḣ Ḧ ḧ Ḩ ḩ Ḱ ḱ Ḵ ḵ Ḻ ḻ Ḿ ḿ Ṁ ṁ Ṅ ṅ Ṉ ṉ Ṕ ṕ Ṗ ṗ Ṙ ṙ Ṟ ṟ Ṡ ṡ Ṫ ṫ Ṯ ṯ Ṽ ṽ Ẁ ẁ Ẃ ẃ Ẅ ẅ Ẇ ẇ Ẋ ẋ Ẍ ẍ Ẏ ẏ Ẑ ẑ Ẕ ẕ ẖ ẗ ẘ ẙ Ả ả Ẻ ẻ Ẽ ẽ Ỉ ỉ Ỏ ỏ Ủ ủ Ỳ ỳ Ỷ ỷ Ỹ ỹ ἀ ἁ ἂ ἃ ἄ ἅ ἆ ἇ ‐ – — ― ‖ ‗ ‘ ’ ‚ ‛ “ ” „ ‟ † ‡ ‥ ‰ ′ ″ ‴ ‵ ‶ ‷ ‸ ‹ › ※ ‾ ⁄ ⁰ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁺ ⁻ ⁼ ⁽ ⁾ ⁿ ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉ ₊ ₋ ₌ ₍ ₎ ₤ ₧ ₩ € € ℃ ℅ ℉ № ℗ ℞ ℠ ™ Ω Å ⅓ ⅔ ⅕ ⅖ ⅗ ⅘ ⅙ ⅚ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞ Ⅰ Ⅱ Ⅲ Ⅳ Ⅴ Ⅵ Ⅶ Ⅷ Ⅸ Ⅹ Ⅺ Ⅻ ⅰ ⅱ ⅲ ⅳ ⅴ ⅵ ⅶ ⅷ ⅸ ⅹ ⅺ ⅻ ← ↑ → ↓ ↔ ↕ ⇐ ⇒ ⇔ ∀ ∂ ∃ ∅ ∆ ∇ ∈ ∋ ∏ ∑ − ∓ ∗ ∘ ∙ √ ∝ ∞ ∟ ∠ ∥ ∧ ∨ ∩ ∪ ∫ ∬ ∮ ∴ ∵ ∶ ∷ ∼ ∾ ≃ ≅ ≈ ≌ ≓ ≠ ≡ ≤ ≥ ≪ ≫ ≮ ≯ ⊂ ⊃ ⊆ ⊇ ⊙ ⊚ ⊥ ⋅ ⋮ ⋯ ⌂ ⌈ ⌉ ⌊ ⌋ ⌐ ⌒ ⌕ ⌠ ⌡ 〈 〉 ␣ ⑀ ⑁ ⑂ ⑃ ⑆ ⑇ ⑈ ⑉ ⒈ ⒉ ⒊ ⒋ ⒌ ⒍ ⒎ ⒏ ⒐ ─ ━ │ ┃ ┄ ┅ ┆ ┇ ┈ ┉ ┊ ┋ ┌ ┍ ┎ ┏ ┐ ┑ ┒ ┓ └ ┕ ┖ ┗ ┘ ┙ ┚ ┛ ├ ┝ ┠ ┣ ┤ ┥ ┨ ┫ ┬ ┯ ┰ ┳ ┴ ┷ ┸ ┻ ┼ ┿ ╂ ╋ ╱ ╲ ▀ ▄ █ ▌ ▐ ░ ▒ ▓ ■ □ ▢ ▣ ▤ ▥ ▦ ▧ ▨ ▩ ▪ ▬ ▭ ▲ △ ▶ ▷ ▼ ▽ ◀ ◁ ◆ ◇ ◊ ○ ◎ ● ◐ ◑ ◘ ◙ ◢ ◣ ★ ☆ ☜ ☞ ☺ ☻ ☼ ♀ ♂ ♠ ♡ ♢ ♣ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♭ ♮ ♯ ✓ ✗ ✠ 、 。

Thanks for the detailed table. One knew this "in principle" but having a table handy really helps!

You and your Windows problems. Sam, haven't you gotten a clue yet? That stuff is BAD - Broken As Designed. (I do have to say, though, that Putty is pretty decent stuff as Windows apps go. It can actually be configured to Do The Right Thing - in most cases, at least.)

Unfortunately I don't have much of a choice - people love to give me money for doing Flash development/engineering work. And no, mtasc isn't an option (and not just because it doesn't support AS3). And working with Flash in an emulated or virtual environment is just plain painful. In case people are interested, I have had great success with the FDT plugin for Eclipse (http://fdt.powerflasher.com), though I want to try FlashDevelop (http://www.flashdevelop.org). Worth noting, work paid for the FDT plugin license, not me.
Also worth noting, I only go into the WinXP dual boot for Flash work and the occasional video gaming session.

Yeah - I have a copy on every thumb drive I own.

Ohhh very nice, thank you. For posterity, just open your session or general settings and go to Window > Translation and select your encoding from the "Received data assumed to be in which character set" at the top.

Ooh, nicer than opening KCharSelect and copying the character to the clipboard. I didn't know US keyboards could produce these without laborious showkey and X configuration. But you still need a character chart to remember which key is what letter.

That's why I laboriously typed this one out, Mike: so it could be used that way. And you're welcome.

Does "Videlicet" mean "Look, you silly bozo, here's your character chart"?
Well look at that, I can type Esperanto in vim. Edit -> Keymap -> esperanto makes "cx" type "ĉ" and "ux" type "ŭ"

No, it means "Look, you silly bozo, here's what I mean". In loose translation, and the way that most people take it, it means "To wit".
But your version has more flavor. I mean, why not gratuitously insult someone when opportunity offers? It makes for much more interesting, involved conversation...
> Well look at that, I can type Esperanto in vim. > Edit -> Keymap -> esperanto > makes "cx" type "ĉ" and "ux" type "ŭ"
Easier than that: type ":dig" and find the digraph for that character. Then, whenever you want it, just hit 'Ctrl-k' and type the digraph. E.g., 'C-k c>' produces a "ĉ" and 'C-k u(' makes a "ŭ". No need to edit keymaps.
> Dankon, piratĉjo de la sep maroj.
I love Esperanto - it's so obvious, and so easy to translate into any language. English: "Dun cow, pirate Jo deals in soup marrow." Russian: "Дунька, упирайся дело сьесть морж." (Dun'ka, resist the business of eat walrus.) Arabic... no wait, Chinese... hmm, maybe Malayalam... um, no, Esperanto isn't quite that universal. Whoops.

Interesting. I always wondered about the Esperanto bits in Harry Harrison's books; there's an episode I recall where an unsavory character kills a creature on the seashore called a "rosmaro". Now I know. The part that I find amusing is

Quite the job of transliteration, there. Or does your Esperanto dictionary contain an entry for "goo goo g'joob"? I wouldn't be surprised...
